RECAP:

Starting the week with Raury in the studio for a full day! I’m very excited about the work we’ve been doing, it’s a hybrid of my favorite genres (folk/hip-hop/indie-alternative). We picked up a song he started working on yesterday. He’d already written and recorded the hooks but write and recorded two verses today with me. He wrote the first verse while Donnie Trumpet and Tunde were here with us but they both left before we started recording. We’ve already developed our workflow from these past few sessions so the process is starting to get easier and easier for us. He’ll typically run through the verses in sections and start feeling good about them. Once they start to sound confident he’ll usually start getting the verses down in one solid take. We record until we have the right full take and comp or edit specific words if there are any issues.

This song is fairly long, just under 6 minutes. We spent quite a while playing with the arrangement and doing some drops/mixing. Once we got it dialed Raury decided he wanted to add Bass Guitar and ran through some takes. We did 3 in total, and ended up keeping 95% of the third take. We punched a few bad notes and balanced the bass in the mix.

3/3 on full songs, we’ve made 3 very pretty/special songs over these past few sessions. I’m really enjoying working with Raury, he’s got a terrific ear and way of articulating what he’s looking for. We worked for 7 hours then he had a friend come by to play him some new songs.
