Very excited to post our video today! This was an incredible session I will never forget. It was an honor to work with all three of these artists, Chuck being an innovator for Hip Hop culture, Chance a new young leader for Hip Hop culture and Nico aka Donnie Trumpet one of the best if not the best upcoming horn players I’ve heard. Unfortunately I didn’t film chuck recording his verse until the end so it starts out with him doing his adlibs over the verse and towards the end cuts to his actual recording take of the final verse. Donnie Trumpet was in the booth killing it on the horns, you have to download the record if you haven’t heard it yet, he’s amazing. This was one of my favorite verses from Chance, I thought it was a perfect representation of him. He starts out singing a simple/powerful hook line and goes into a very lyrical verse and with his unique style it makes it something you want to rewind and bring back after you hear it.
Incredible session tonight!! Got to listen to Nikki Jean’s new project in full, eat a delicious brown sugar cake that she baked and record a new Ab Soul verse! Sounds like an award winning Monday in my opinion. Great night with great people, all of whom are incredibly talented. Ab Soul wrote his verse very fast, didn’t see him writing down any of his verse and he was very professional recording. Communication with an engineer is essential and when you know what you need you create so much easier it allows the creative energy to flow. Really great session tonight!
Posted a little clip on Instagram if you didn’t get a chance to check it out, here’s the link: http://instagram.com/p/pSuLN5G6Ve/
Late night on a Sunday making some new music, can’t think of a better way to welcome in the week! Got to meet Chris and work on a few new songs, he has a new tape coming out tomorrow – make sure to check it out if you’re unfamiliar. We had an 8+ hour night session, started on a track produced by Nate Fox and after we started a new song from Scratch with Nate, Donnie & JP. We always make magic when we get together, these guys are all extremely talented, some of my favorite sessions since starting Truth.
One of my personal favorites from the entire history of Truth Studios will always be this song/video and Orange Soda. Vic has always continued to be one of the most impressive artists to ever work at our studio. His talent and skill level paired with his charisma and personal make him extraordinarily fixating. With a very refreshing sound and fun feeling we premiered the video of Vic Mensa performing Hollywood LA Live at Truth Studios in LA. Check it out on the video page!
Had the honor of working with these two legends. Mr. Porter is someone I regard as a super producer given the magnitude of his catalogue. His music is truly incredible, I doubt you know a fraction of his catalogue so I highly suggest you do your research and learn about him.
Robert Glasper is also another growing legend who recently won a grammy for R&B Album of the year. One of the most incredible piano players I have ever seen.
Very special to be working with musicians of this caliber, honored to be a fly on the wall doing my best to film and keep out of the way I had to document the moment. The way they work is amazing! They would create so fast!! Either one would have a drum idea (Mr. Porter) or a piano/synth idea (Glasper) and they would have a full track laid out within minutes. As soon as one was down it was on to the next. They work together in nearly perfect harmony both on the same page at all times.
After a show in San Diego last night Joey came up to LA and ended up staying across the street from the studio. Had a long writing session, played him a ton of beats from various producers I work with and got a new track started (hook and first verse).
After recording we shot an in-studio performance video for the song “Two Lips” that we recorded together over a J Dilla beat last year. Thanks to Akomplice Clothing for that connection, still to this day it is one of my favorite songs recorded at Truth.
The video looks incredible, may be one of the best I’ve shot in all the performance videos. Really happy we got to do that last night. Will be editing by the end of this month and hope to post the video in June.
Always love working with Joey.
Today Tish released an acoustic version of the song “All That I Can Do” with producer and guitar player Dave Kunchio. This song developed from a writing session we had not too long ago. Dave and Tish have amazing creative chemistry together watching them work is a real treat. Dave played through a lot of chords and progressions before landing on an idea and Tish almost immediately started with the melody for the chorus. Once we laid down a melody guide track she write the lyrics to fill it in and we knocked out the hook. Dave wrote a change for the verse and we laid out the arrangement musically then Tish started to write her verses. I was shocked how fast she works, had the first verse in about 15 minutes. We recorded it within a few takes and she came out to listen, wrote the second verse and recorded it in similar fashion and we had it done in a relatively short period of time. So much fun working like this with insanely talented musicians.
We let the track sit for a few weeks not knowing what we were going to do next. I got a call saying they wanted to release it within 24 hours and knocked out the mix. Given that I had to fit this in urgently I didn’t get to spend as much time as I wanted. When the video is released they will use the mix that treated the sibilance better. Hurts my heart when things go out that aren’t 100% right because I know how much it means to have it done right. Can’t stress the importance of detail in a mix.
I spread this mix out over 8 analog summing channels in the Dangerous D Box, guitar on 2 channels, vocal leads on 2 channels, vocal backgrounds on two channels and all effects on two channels with individual pan control. Along with the individual pan control I also used the master trim pot on the D Box when I was printing the final mix. This allows for human feel and dynamic change to be incorporated in the song.
I believe the music video is coming out tomorrow, will post the link as soon as it’s live online.
BLU Recording Session at Truth Studios Los Angeles with engineer Nick B. We recorded 5 new songs in 2 hours, BLU was killing it as usual! After a long mixing session this was a perfect way to end the day.
New album coming soon completely recorded at Truth Studios !!
Ady Suleiman Recording Session at Truth Studios [DAY 9], our final day in the studio and it was a perfect way to end his stay in LA. We recorded him on three different big feature songs that came out sounding so amazing !! I love his sound, as I mentioned before he does a lot of layered background vocals and they all sound fantastic when you put the whole song together!
What better way to end a big month than a recording session with one of LA’s finest. Blu has been a personal favorite of mine since 2007/2008 when Below the Heavens was released. Anyone who knows me or follows the blog probably knows how much love we have for Blu at Truth.
On the studio side of things Blu is always a great client because he comes in prepared, he’s very well rehearsed and we get a lot of work done. All of his lyrics are written, his production is in a folder on a drive he hands me when he walks in and we get right to work.
