Raury Recording Session 3
RECORDING LOG:
Artist: Raury
Producer: SOX
Engineer: Nick Breton
RECAP:
Today was my third recording session with Raury and we finished the two songs we’ve been working on over our previous two sessions. We started on the first song (can’t give the title) by adjusting vocal levels, he wanted to have the lyrics slightly quieter but more articulate at the same time. This was achieved by adjusting the EQ and compression to help make his vocals cut through and maintain an even amplitude throughout the song. Once we got the recorded vocals sitting right in the mix with the music Raury recorded another verse along with doubles and harmonies. We ran through ideas with different vocal effects, we tried Auto Tune but bailed because it didn’t get us the right texture. I wanted to try a vocoder (set via midi on a harmony engine plug in) and while trying that we ended up with a chord in the harmony engine that we automated through different sections of the song. We spent more time dialing this song in and when we felt we were both happy and the listening experience felt right we moved on to the second song.
We took the same approach for the second record making small adjustements to our previously recorded vocals. Raury wrote a rap verse for this song which we both loved. Once we recorded the pieces we needed we started to tune it in. We played around with some sequencing ideas to help glue the music to the lyrics. We dropped the main vocal sample out to give his rap space then I filtered the mid and high frequencies out of the keys and we created a sweep back to the original music on the way out of his verse. The cherry on top came from two sections where I did a complete audio drop after a reverb swell that ends on a snare drum hit. Subtle triggers to keep your interest that we both loved.
I’ve been working on stop motion documenting studio sessions this year so once we finished recording I started getting some cool shots with Raury. The pictures turned out incredible, can’t wait to put it together and get online up for everyone to check it out!
We left the studio feeling like we’d accomplished something great, both playing the tracks after our session and talked about making some special music. These sessions have been really fun, we’re tentatively planning a fourth for tomorrow but it’s the Super Bowl so..
