RECAP:

The second session with Raury & Donnie Trumpet ! We jumped right to work when we got in the studio and started on the first song. Raury recorded his vocals which turned out very good. We did about 4 or 5 tracks where he sang a lead, doubles on some lines and a high harmony on others. We also made a really cool vocal stack / pad to blend in with the instruments. Donnie Trumpet went in after Raury finished and played some unreal trumpet lines over the entire track. I was baffled watching Donnie recording.. Felt like a Miles Davis recording with him playing the muted trumpet. We layered different ideas and tried out a half speed recording but ultimately decided to cut most of the trumpet back. It’s important to know when you’ve gone to far and call it quits before doing too much. The first song turned out really great !

Donnie Trumpet had to leave half way through the session but Raury pulled up a really beautiful track from another producer and we recorded over that. The track was pretty bare so we left the vocals much in the same way. I tried to get the track to feel like the piano and Raury were in the same space singing live together. I was very impressed by the piano sound sonically, Raury said it came from a Prophet synth keyboard and I couldn’t believe it. We ran through the second song by looping different sections until we got the right recordings and eventually wound up with the full song!

Another incredible day with these guys, they’re extraordinarily talented and the workflow is very smooth.
