RECAP:

I met a new client through Mik and Joseph I downstairs. We’ve talked a number of times over the past years but finally locked into work on music. We cracked open a session and I started to look under the hood. Initially, everything seemed solid. I thought the levels were perfect, vocals sounded decent like they had potential. The beat was perfect, it’s rare to get a great beat that sounds exactly like the two-track when you A/B the beat and track outs.

Initially, the files appeared to be solid. I thought the levels it was tracked at were perfect, mic sounded decent like it had potential. The beat was perfect, it’s rare to get a great beat that sounds exactly like the two-track when you A/B the beat and track outs.

Once I dug into the vocals I realized they didn’t take EQ well, they seemed to break apart and distort easily. The same happened with my overall mix when I applied light saturation. When files break a certain way it makes me feel like it wasn’t recorded on high-quality gear. A great converter goes a long way in this new age form of recording.

We’re meeting on Monday to review and likely re-record the vocals. Update to follow.
