RECAP:

I can’t think of a better way to start a month than a session with Mick Jenkins where he plays 9 songs from his new album to start the session.. He’s one of my favorite living rappers and his new album is hands down my favorite of his projects and it’s not even finished yet. The concept for his new album is great, the explanation for why he’s doing what he’s doing is inspiring and I know this project is going to leave a deep imprint in music for this generation of rap.. Especially when you look back through all the filth and trash most people listen to now that’s popular in “Rap”.

Jesse Boykins III came to the studio just after Mick finished playing the albim. He and Mick spoke for a few minutes, Jesse played us a few tracks then we decided to get started. Lon uses Logic 10 so I had him running through the Aux cable until he got to a point where we put it in Pro Tools for Jesse to build on. Jesse started playing some chords on the piano so we recorded those first. Once we got the chords down he added a piano bass line. After we got the piano bass line in I tuned my electric guitar and Jesse added some quick chord strums. As soon as he finished that I tuned the bass and he put in a bass guitar bass line.

The guys vibed out to the track for a little bit writing and Jesse was first to go in and record his vocals. He did a lead vocal with 3 harmonies and an additional ad-lib high note over the end.. It came out very, very good !!

Mick was ready with his verse immediately after, it was 8 bars but the way he did it was very cool. We recorded them in two bar chunks that he doubled so it almost felt like a bridge or a separated piece all together but we kept it. Once we finished with Mick’s part he had a singer named Cozmeduse come in to double his verse. She also wrote her own section that we recorded after and it sounded like she channeled Erykah Badu for it.. Insane !

Very strong 4 hour session today, first of many with Mick for the week..
