RECAP:

VERY VERY VERY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS! Clairo’s debut album single “Bags” IS OUT NOW!!!! She wrote this song and we recorded it together a few months ago. Clairo and I had multiple multi-day sessions this year and each time we got together we made between 3 and 8 new songs! She’s a badass all around in the studio, playing guitars, bass, piano and synths while slaying lead vocal takes in one to three tries. Our work has been fairly effortless as the music flows very naturally. We’ve experimented with a lot of vocal chains over the course of these sessions and the common denominator is her talent. I’m just thankful she’s open to my ideas :).

This is my first time getting the official stamp of co-producer and although I’ve wanted to be in this roll from day one, after nearly 11 years engineering I can’t think of a better place to start. We had so much fun with this song. I started by finding a few raw drum sounds off my hard drive and pulling them into Pro Tools. I built a simple drum pattern with kick/snare/hats as Clairo was playing guitar. She laid down the guitar and started writing to the base of the track. Within 45 minutes she was ready to record.

RECORDING:

I believe we set up the Sony C37a but I’ll have to go back and check my session log to be sure. Same goes for the pre amp, it sounds like the 1084 but I’ve been bouncing around a lot lately so I’ll have to go back in and review. Once she crushed the vocals we sat with it for a while and vibed. She added some upright piano (slightly out of tune) and I through some auto-tune / tape flutter over it to fuck it up a little. I plugged up the Moog Voyager and started adding all kinds of crazy sounds throughout the record. Luckily those made it through the final call and onto her debut single.
