RECAP:
Finally back in the studio with Cam O’bi !! He’s been in Chicago for over a month working on Chance’s new album Coloring Book, working with Noname Gypsy, The Mind, and others. We had a lot to catch up on since we work three to four days a week together when he’s in town. As he was loading all of the files onto my hard drive I played him my favorite selection of tracks I’ve been working on since he left. That included the new song from Mick Jenkins, Little Simz, Smino & Monte Booker and a few others. He enjoyed all of them and started playing me some songs he’s been working on.. Blew me away, as expected !! After thumbing through five or six songs we cracked open a session and I started going to work. It was recorded in a big studio but it sounds like the engineer was not experienced enough to handle the recording properly. After the first playback Cam explained the vocals sounded thin because a low cut filter was on everything… Bummer. Sounds like the song was recorded through a telephone.. If that wasn’t enough, the routing and entire session was all over the place. Stripped the session down to basics and started setting up my routing. We ran into a problem with the overhead mic’s when one sounded much later than the other creating a weird phase/flam sound.. Cam mentioned it and I wasn’t paying attention to the WAVES X NOISE plugin – not realizing it was a HUGE processor hog… Over 5000ms of delay from the delay compensation meter.. Crazy! After that was removed everything fell into place and we started construction. There’s a point where the song transitions from Cam’s beat to a live music breakdown and we discussed ideas for arranging and locked everything in.. Can’t wait to hear this song all finished.. Unfortunately there’s a lot of work to be done, likely a lot of re-recording but in the end it will be worth the work.. As everything is working with Cam!
Very excited to have him back in the studio and get back to work on the many projects he has going right now !
