RECAP:

Finally back in the studio with Cam !! He was in Chicago for roughly a month working on Telefone with Noname and also worked on records for his album. We spent the first 45 minutes catching up and talking about what we’ve both been working on. Cam had some large files to download which took about three hours to download but in the meantime, he had another session for us to work on.

We loaded up the session he wanted to work on and set up a 414 close on the upright. We worked on getting a piano tone then recorded takes for him to analyze. After about seven takes we added the U87 as a room mic with less percussive sounds on the strings/hammers. We dialed in both mics then Cam recorded for almost four hours working on a 16 bar section. I’ve rarely experienced anything like the dedication I see from Cam in any of my sessions over the past 8 years. The ability for him to remain committed and focused on the task he has is unparalleled. He continues to maintain accuracy and energy after playing the same takes for literally hours. We tracked 50 takes and of those he wanted to keep 3.

I created a comp for Cam to listen to tonight and revisit at a later date. We have three 16 bar piano sections playing one after another for reference. With all that time spent today Cam still wants to re-record it to get the feeling right.. UNREAL!!!
