RECAP:

I met a new client today by the name of Boone Hogg. From my home state (Utah) so I immediately felt connected to him because it’s a special state.. You’d have to live there to understand why. We started the session off by talking for about 45 minutes, getting familiar with each other and setting up our expectations for the session. He had five to six songs that he wanted to record today, all produced by him in Ableton Live. The tracking basically went like this for all songs:

We’d import the stems to the beat and I’d do a quick dry mix to get levels right. I’d build out my session template for recording and get him on the mic to set levels. During the process of setting levels he’d do a full run through the entire song. This allowed me to set markers on each section of the song and hear what he was trying to accomplish. After a run through we’d decide what part we wanted to start on, often the hook first but sometimes we’d work linear from beginning to end. We may find ourselves punching in every few bars but in some cases he would go through an entire section in one take and nail it.

We worked like that and got all 5 songs recorded, through together a rough bounce for him on all 5 songs and exported the vocal stems to each song. Very efficient, smooth and fun recording session. Looking forward to the next one!
