RECAP:

After a long day at NAMM I found myself really wanting to go back to the studio. This place is my second home (or even my first home because I spend so much time here). Asher hit me up for a last minute session so he could knock out a feature for Trinidad James and it was the perfect end to my night. After being at NAMM with Dominic and demoing a lot of new gear I was very excited to get back in the studio and do some work.

I hadn’t seen Asher in 2016 so when he got in we spent about an hour hanging out and catching up. We talked about what we’d both been working on then we got into music and what we’d both been listening to. I stressed the importance of listening to the Leon Bridges album, especially the song River. I also highly recommended the new Anderson Paak album “Malibu” because they’re my favorite two albums to listen to this month.

Once we listened to a few songs Asher sent the instrumental we were recording to, I prepped the session and set him up on the mic.. The rest is just watching him do what he does best. We got the levels quickly, got right to recording and as you can see in the picture this is Asher in his natural habitat as comfortable as can be rapping his verse. His style comes off effortlessly but in such a way that you can tell he’s very skilled and practiced with what he’s doing. Working with him is often very easy because he’s efficient, he knows what he’s after when he gets in the booth and we just work until we get the take that feels right to both of us. When a take feels right, typically that means if it’s a one take verse (almost always with Asher).. That the vibe is good, the annunciation of all words are clear, the timing is good enough (you can always nit pick) and the levels are consistent. That’s my main checklist with a client I’ve been working with for years,  I always want recordings to feel real.
